Product Description

South of the clouds, in the land of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, dwell the descendants of a once pastoral people, the Nakhi. In ancient times, family names were passed from mother to child, there were no marriages, and women alone raised children. (In the Nakhi language, there is no word for "father.") Today there are still Nakhi who follow these traditions, and Nakhi folktales reflect these beliefs. In the legends presented here we are introduced to a fantastic cast of characters: plants, insects, animals - all of them female!

The Cloak of Dreams: Chinese Fairy Tales (Oddly Modern Fairy Tales) for sale

    Product Description

A man is changed into a flea and must bring his future parents together in order to become human again. A woman convinces a river god to cure her sick son, but the remedy has mixed consequences. A young man must choose whether to be close to his wife's soul or body. And two deaf mutes transcend their physical existence in the garden of dreams. Strange and fantastical, these fairy tales of Béla Balázs (1884-1949), Hungarian writer, film critic, and famous librettist of Bluebeard's Castle, reflect his profound interest in friendship, alienation, and Taoist philosophy. Translated and introduced by Jack Zipes, one of the world's leading authorities on fairy tales, The Cloak of Dreams brings together sixteen of Balázs's unique and haunting stories.

Written in 1921, these fairy tales were originally published with twenty images drawn in the Chinese style by painter Mariette Lydis, and this new edition includes a selection of Lydis's brilliant illustrations. Together, the tales and pictures accentuate the motifs and themes that run throughout Balázs's work: wandering protagonists, mysterious woods and mountains, solitude, and magical transformation. His fairy tales express our deepest desires and the hope that, even in the midst of tragedy, we can transcend our difficulties and forge our own destinies.

Unusual, wondrous fairy tales that examine the world's cruelties and twists of fate, The Cloak of Dreams will entertain, startle, and intrigue.

This review is from: The Cloak of Dreams: Chinese Fairy Tales (Oddly Modern Fairy Tales) (Hardcover)
This is a collection of original fairy tales written by Bela Balázs, not retellings of other tales. The tales are an interesting peephole into Balázs's world, one influenced by two world wars and the European strife surrounding the war periods, especially for a Hungarian Jew who felt isolated and alone due to his heritage--one that was not emphasized by his family or its teachings but nevertheless informed his place in European society.

The translation of the tales as well as the introduction are by the indefatigable Jack Zipes. He adeptly discusses Balázs personal history as well as his interest in fairy tales that led him to write his own personal ones. Balázs concurrent interest in Taoist philosophy also explains his desire to write fairy tales with a Chinese flavor, one that is supported by the accompanying illustrations. Zipes explains that this was not unusual at the time for other authors such as Herman Hesse and Hugo von Hafmannsthal... Read more

This review is from: The Cloak of Dreams: Chinese Fairy Tales (Oddly Modern Fairy Tales) (Hardcover)
This is a small book, and the first half is a forward/intro about..... who knows what. It's rambling, uninteresting, and after 5 pages I skipped it. The Chinese fairy tales are odd. I'm not really sure how else to describe them. Certainly not what I was expecting, nor wanting, even though the first story (The Cloak of Dreams) was interesting. The cover is gorgeous.

This review is from: Two of Everything (Hardcover)
Lily Toy Hong's book is a delight for both children and adults alike. Her colorful and comical illustrations please the soul, and both the text and the pictures keep the attention of all school-aged children.

In the state of Utah, the children in the schools and public libraries selected her book as The Best Picturebook of the Year in conjunction with nominees presented by the Utah Librarian's Association.

Lily's book shows Chinese characters and artifacts depicted in authentic dress and style. How do I know? I am one of her sisters raised in a loving home of parents and grandparents who immigrated from China and who preserved many of the ways of their roots.

Any classroom teacher (which I am) who is looking for a book to raise the spirits and share a fun Chinese folktale with need look no further than Two of Everything! (Math teachers can use it to introduce the concept of doubling, and expand it to tripling, etc.)

        Respectfully, Kim Hong Wu

There is something funny about saying Haktak. It makes the book enjoyable to read. A very fun folktale that I had never heard before. My daughter got it as a library book and I am considering buying it for her.

This review is from: Two of Everything (Hardcover)
This book is the embodiment of everything (in a word) pleasant. It's just a pleasant pleasant story to read through. Based on a classic Chinese folktale, the book follows an old married couple and their life. The two live in utter simplicity, only eating the food from their garden and occasionally selling the surplus when they get the chance. One day the old man, Mr. Haktak, is digging in the garden when he finds an old pot. He brings it home to his wife (after a fair amount of struggling and straining) and it isn't long before the two discover that the pot is magic. Indeed, after Mr. Haktak's purse and Mrs. Haktak's hairpins fall in and wondrously duplicate the two come to the rather obvious conclusion that the pot doubles anything that falls into it. They're right of course, and the pot truly seems as if it is too good to be true. Unfortunately, the day Mrs. Haktak accidentally falls into the pot herself, things become a little more complicated for the two...three...four... Read more

Each story has a very unique, and tasteful music throughout that stirs your imagination, which only can be possible on audio CD. East of the Sun and West of the Moon has always been my favorite fairy tale and I collect different versions. I was excited to find an audio version until I heard it. The music is very distracting and makes listening to the words difficult. There is nothing wrong with just reading a story. The human voice is melodic enough that you don't need to add all that other stuff. It changes the whole mood of the story and I really didn't like it.
