These surreal, disquieting but compelling fables gain from being narrated in crisp, simple language. This spellbinding collection is not for the faint-hearted, but it will haunt you for days afterwards. -South China Morning Post Indulge in the bizarre fantasy world of the Qing Dynasty through the eyes of the wildly imaginative scholar Po Chung-Ling, the pioneer of hip horror. Author Julie Lipson takes inspiration from and interprets Po's Strange Tales of Liu Tzai Pavilion. 4.0 out of 5 stars a surprise, February 26, 2012
I'm not a great one for writing reviews, but I feel I should say something about this book. I found it quite by chance on goodreads and was truly surprised. Every story is completely different, but the main thing is that the ideas are completely modern, as though someone wrote them today. There is no old feeling about it. And the writing is great. Some are done humorously, some are done romantically, some are really quite scary. It's got everything in it, but there's a style. The man who wrote it three hundred years ago must be a crazy genius who looked way ahead into the future. I truly recommend reading this book.

This review is from: Ghost Stories of 17th Century China: From Po Chung-Ling's Liu Tzai Pavilion (Paperback)
This book was amazing, it was a beautiful mix of poetry, horror and parable. It is hard to believe that these stories came from 17th Century China, they seem so contemporary. I would recommend these stories to anyone. They are both grotesque and beautiful! I eagerly await the next volume!
