Product Description

Heian (pronounced "HEY-an") means “peace” in Japanese. For over 30 years, Heian has published books about Asia, aiming to promote peace through a better understanding between cultures. Stone Bridge Press is proud to introduce Heian as a new imprint, expanding our own mission to offer fine books about Japan and about Asia to Western readers.

Adults retell the tales of their childhood in this unique new series. Each story can be read individually, or read aloud to young children just learning to “listen.” China Tells How the World Began includes “How the World Began” and “Why Cats Hate Rats.” Chinese Fables Remembered includes “The Brothers and the Birds” and “The Two Rooster Friends.”

Miyoko Matsutani, a past winner of the International Hans Christian Anderson Award, listened carefully as Miwa Kurita retold the stories of her childhood, transcribing them for this collection. Saoko Mitsukuri studied art in Korea and has illustrated several folktale collections.

The first fable is of two brothers. One is grateful and humble. The other is greedy and spoiled. The grateful brother is helped by all those around him, because he is such a pleasure. The greedy brother ends up falling to his death because of his envy and greed. The second fable is of two roosters. One rooster is always trying to do better than the other rooster. He brags a lot, also, and is rude and degrading to the nice rooster. The moral of this fable is to know your limitations and to not boast. My 3-year-old daughter, Parish, did not like this book. I tried reading it to her several times. I showed her the pictures, but she never could focus on the book. Keep in mind that she loves to read. In my last attempt to engage her, I retold the story in some of my words, some of the author's words. I had to condense the message. This worked... This review is from: The Five Mouse Brothers (A Beautifully Illustrated Children Picture Book Adapted From a Classic Chinese Folktale; Perfect Bedtime Story) (Kindle Edition) I bought the kindle version of the book expecting it to be as light-hearted and funny like The Five Mouse Sisters was. As I begin to read it to my kids at bedtime, I had to turn the tablet away and make up my own words. I was so surprised at its grim punishments like, death by drowning, eating poison and "death by mouse trap". It lacks true morality and there was no lesson for my kids to absorb from it. I think this book has the ability to be great if it was more light hearted and had more humor. My 3 and 6 year olds would have been horrified before I turned off the lights after reading this book. Product Description

To travel to the past through the mind of a genius is the definition of these series. Written as an expression to preserve Chinese heritage in Indonesia, series by Kho Ping Hoo will take you to the golden age of far east civilization....

"The boy was still very young. He must have been no more than seven years old. He stood like a statue, standing in a rather high plain in the forests of the Mountain of A Thousand Flowers, facing east...."

The age of innocence and the story of survivability remark the flow of these series....

"But disaster struck this family when one night, three burglars broke into their home. These criminals had originally intended only to steal valuables from this wealthy family, but when they entered the bedroom, Sin Liong's father and mother caught them by surprise. Fearing that they might be recognized, the three men killed Sin Liong's parents with slashes of machetes...."

The liberty of being inculpable is a blessing in disguise for the youth after his traumatic occurrence ....

"He would sit under the sun for two to three hours until all of his body was covered in sweat and felt hot before he stopped. Also in the moonlit night he would sit on the same rock, naked, bathing in a full-moon light for seven nights....."

The ancient romanticism.. the age of complacency.. with concealed danger that could cost your life... prying around mysteriously....

"Now, even his smile had disappeared, his mouth showed a mocking grin, his eyes flashing and his voice turned rigid, harsh, and condescending...."

"This was because this technique required a very cruel condition, i.e. gathering dark forces by sucking and drinking blood, brain and marrow of children who were still pure..."

"There was no way for her to commit suicide; it was even useless to fight back. Even after all the cries, screaming, and pleading, all her efforts to struggle were of no use..."

With a background of ancient China, the old age nostalgic stories with kungfu style infusion and accompanied by moral rhetorics, the series could be your best companion at your leisure. Why don't you get a cup of tea, relax, and start to enjoy the mystery of the past.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful We All Have A Story!, January 22, 2002 barbara ulbrich (california) - See all my reviews This review is from: White Wave: A Chinese Tale (Hardcover) Not only is White Wave a story of a farmer who loses something and someone he loves, it is a perfect story for others who have lost a loved one. It makes us remember and remind ourselves we all have a story, and how we live our lives will depend on the story others will tell about us. As an elementary teacher, I have read this story aloud hundreds of times. It is still as moving to me as it was the first time it was read aloud to me and a group of adults at a reading conference more than 25 years ago. In this instance there is much more. The hero grows, the story is shared with family and then an ending with a needed truism. The art work is just right as is the story presentation.Depending upon the recipient it can just be a good story or a stepping stone to continuing appreciation.
